Blepharoplasty

Do you know that there are around 100,000 people who choose to undergo blepharoplasty every year to enhance their looks?

Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a rapidly-growing form of improving a person’s physical appearance. It is a cosmetic procedure that involves the removal of fat, mostly together with excess muscles and skin from the lower and upper eyelids.

Blepharoplasty works to droopy eyelids, puffy eyes, and baggy skin underneath the eyes. Persons with droopy eyelids tend to look older than they really are, and may also impair their vision. Puffy eyes and baggy skin gives a worn-out and tired look. Blepharoplasty corrects these issues. However, this particular cosmetic procedure is not capable of altering fine line, wrinkles, or dark circles around the eyes, nor those sagging eyebrows. Although blepharoplasty is mostly done as an independent procedure, however, there are instances when the surgeon will recommend patients to undergo some other procedures along with it, such as a face lift, a skin resurfacing, or a brow lift, in order to obtain maximum results.

Although blepharoplasty is considered a cosmetic surgery, it is not always performed as mere look enhancer. Sometimes, the surgery is essential as treatment of ptosis – a medical condition resulting from nerve damage or poor muscle tones. Ptosis is characterized by drooping eyelids, which eventually leads to blocked vision.

Persons who are thinking about having blepharoplasty should be not less than 35 years old, emotionally stable, physically healthy, and has fully understood the procedure. Those who have the following health conditions may be exempted from receiving the procedure: high blood pressure, dry eye, glaucoma, Graves’ disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or hypothyroidism. Certain issues of anatomy that can disqualify people from having eyelid surgery include bone and other supporting structures.

When blepharoplasty is done by certified and professional plastic surgeon, complications from the procedure are not common and are often minor. However, complications are not always guaranteed as nonexistent. Adverse reaction to the anesthetic or certain infections may still occur. Risks may be reduced by completely following all of the surgeon’s instructions prior and after surgery.

The minor complication which are likely to happen include: temporary blurred or double vision; temporary swelling of the eyelids; and irregularities in scarring or healing. Some patients may experience difficulties in closing their eyes. This is most often temporary, although on rare occasions, this could be permanent.

Oriental blepharoplasty, or more familiarly known as Asian blepharoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure which involves the reshaping of the skin around the patient’s eyes. This type of plastic surgery is done in order to give the patient a “double eyelid” or a crease on the upper eyelid.

Around half of the Eastern Asians possess single eyelids – that is, the eyelid that does not have a crease. Due to this fact, Asian blepharoplasty is considered to be the most sought-after plastic surgery in Taiwan, and the rest of Asia. Although, this has become a very popular trend, it still involves a high rate of side effects or complications.

Not all people are very enthusiastic about the thought of going under the knife. Fortunately, non-surgical blepharoplasty is now available. A Beverly Hills blepharoplasty center takes “looking good” into a whole new level. The Westside Medical Spa offers a safe, non-invasive, less expensive alternative to eyelid surgery with its Non Surgical Blepharoplasty. This unique technique of getting rid of bags and dark circles underneath the eyes is done by injecting Restylane to smoothen and level the skin beneath the patient’s eyes.

Science has certainly paved the way for people to achieve the look they’d rather have. But still, the choice should be a result of careful research on the procedure, and extensive mental preparation.
