Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty, or vagina surgery, may sound like something taken from a “strictly for adults” film, but it is actually as real as it can get. This surgical procedure, which is sometimes spelled as labioplasty, works to reshape and/or reduce the external structures of the female genital.
Labiaplasty is done on women due to either of these two main reasons: a feeling of discomfort when having sexual intercourse or when engaging in physical activities; and simply to make modifications on the appearance of their sex organs. Most women who undergo this procedure aim to shorten the length of their genitalia.
Females who possess sagging or long genitalia or vaginal lips may opt to have labiaplasty to correct the issue. Although some women may have this “condition” since birth, there are others who only developed it over the years.
Even if the population of labiaplasty has grown since its discovery, the procedure continues to stir up strong emotional sentiments more than any other type of cosmetic surgery. Much of the controversy can be observed among women who think that they have abnormal labia. While most plastic surgeons suggest that labiaplasty is advisable to those women who have problems during sexual intimacy, physical activities, or even from simply wearing tight-fit clothes, a number of women choose to undergo the surgery in order to alter the “look” of their vulvas.
A lot of people from both genders still insist that the need for labiaplasty is only brought about by some marketing scheme, and the images projected by the media regarding the “ideal” appearance of the female genitalia. A major concern about undergoing such surgery is the fact that it can likely cause complications when a woman’s gives birth.
A patient’s labiaplasty consultation should involve a thorough discussion of the procedure, including the required recovery period, risks of complications, and cost. The surgeon should also assess the changes desired by the patient, and whether these can be achieved by the surgery.
While labiaplasty is gaining popularity, there are only a few labiaplasty surgeons who are qualified to perform the procedure. So, although the surgery only takes about an hour or two, there are instances where patients may be required to stay overnight, especially if they had to travel far to get to the facility.
Typically, local anesthesia is used during surgery, which leaves the patient numbed but awake. But even if general anesthesia or sedation is mostly unnecessary, some patients are uncomfortable being awake whole the procedure is carried out.
After the surgery, patients will be required to sit on inflatable donut-like cushions, to ease any discomfort and/or pain. Also, surgeon may prescribe you some kind of therapeutic soaking during the post operative stages to assist in the healing process. There may also be prescribed oral antibiotics to prevent the risks of infection. Other oral medication may also be given for pain.
Surgeons should advise their patients to report severe and persistent pain or any other abnormal symptoms felt. Further, surgeons should provide their patients with post-operative guidelines to prevent the onset of complications. Since a lot of labiaplasty patients have to travel for the surgery, they may send a picture of their labia within six weeks for follow-up purposes. The final appearance or the actual results will be seen between three and six months from the operation.
Labiaplasty costs differ according to the geographic location where the surgery is going to be performed, the surgeon performing it, and other possible surgical combinations done. However, labiaplasty cost is generally between $3,500 and $12,000.
Labiaplasty can be done merely for the sake of aesthetics where it’s totally unnecessary. But for women who have real health issues, this can be a rewarding form of cosmetic surgery.
