Reconstruction

Among the various breast surgeries available today, the reconstruction of a breast remains to be the most rewarding. Currently, modern technologies have come up with several methods and devices which make it possible for surgeons to construct a breast that looks very close to that of a natural breast.

Breast reconstruction is a type of breast surgery that is performed in order to restore the natural shape of the breast, right after removing the entire or a part of it, due to breast cancer or some other disease. The goal of breast reconstruction surgery is to come up with a reconstructed breast that closely matches the remainder of the natural breast. The removal of the entire breast, known as mastectomy, or the removal of a part of the breast, known as lumpectomy, is done as a form of breast cancer treatment.

There is more than one way to carry out reconstruction. That is why, it is imperative for patients to consult their surgeons about the various options so that they will achieve the best results. The surgeon’s recommendations are based on: the amount of tissue removed from the breast, the condition of the breast tissue where reconstruction is supposed to be done on, radiotherapy exposure, patient’s build and overall health, and the patient’s lifestyle and desired results. Further, a reconstructed nipple can be obtained as a separate surgery as soon as the reconstruction of the breast has been completed and has achieved its shape. But, this is not a requirement, and may be skipped unless desired by the patient.

There are several benefits that come with breast reconstruction, such as: not having to wear prosthesis or external artificial breasts; provides natural appearance underneath the clothes; gives natural shape even in the absence of bras and clothes; restores and enhances self-confidence, appeal, and sexuality. Moreover, reconstruction does not hinder any future treatments like hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. X-rays and scans can still provide reliable results, and the recurrence of cancer is still detectable.

Even if breast reconstruction offer several advantages, you can’t expect perfect results. Some limitations of the surgery includes: not being able to reconstruct the exact shape and appearance of the breasts prior mastectomy or lumpectomy; reduced sensitivity; does not make breastfeeding possible on the reconstructed breast; more than one surgery may be required to obtain a good match between the two breasts; nipple reconstruction is carried out separately.

Patients of reconstruction should be made aware by their surgeons that, although results are widely varied, it is not likely to achieve a good match on the first surgery. Reconstruction may provide a “balanced” appearance underneath a bra and/or clothes, but when completely naked, reconstructed dress may appear less droopy than the natural breast. This should be explained well to the patients, so that they won’t get frustrated with the possible results of the surgery.

For those whose reconstructed breasts look entirely different from their natural breasts, they may choose to undergo another or a series of surgeries until an acceptable match is obtained. However, those who are not willing to go under another operation may opt to wear external partial prosthesis inside the bra to project a better breast balance. Breast prostheses are available in different sizes, shapes, and colors to match the patient’s skin tone. These are made of silicone, soft enough to be bent according to the natural contours of the breast. A prosthesis that fits well should be able to give you a good match of the other breast.

Reconstruction is widely done in every part of the country. Whether you’re looking for a Los Angeles breast reconstruction center, or one in Dallas, you are sure to find a facility that will do the job.
